The verdict
The VIR Club is the membership side of Virginia International Raceway, one of the great American road courses. VIR opened in 1957, closed in 1974 and was reborn in 2000, and the club — formally the VIR Motorsport Country Club — dates from that revival. The Full Course runs 3.27 miles and 17 turns with roughly 130 ft of elevation change through the uphill Esses and Oak Tree, and the property offers five configurations in total, two of which can run at the same time. Members get up to 18 member driving days a year with run groups by skill level and on-track coaching, plus the country-club half: the Tavern restaurant, swimming pool, skeet range, kart track, preferred parking, free entry to spectator events and discounts at the Lodge, Paddock suites and pro shop. Villas at South Bend overlook the Esses and are sold as real estate.
Best forDrivers in the Carolinas and Virginia who would rather have a legendary circuit and a real resort than unlimited laps on a small private course.

What works
- One of the most respected road courses in North America, not a new-build private circuit
- Five configurations, two of which can run at once
- Full resort behind it — lodging, dining, karting and spa on property
- Published initiation figure, which most private clubs will not give you
What to weigh up
- Up to 18 member days a year is far less seat time than an unlimited-access private club
- VIR runs a heavy professional and public calendar, so it is not a members-only venue
- Current dues beyond the initiation figure are not published
- Alton is rural — the nearest sizeable city is Danville, 12 miles away
Amenities
- 3.27-mile Full Course plus four more configurations
- Up to 18 member driving days per year
- Run groups by skill level and on-track coaching
- Tavern restaurant and clubhouse
- Swimming pool and spa services
- Skeet range
- Kart track
- Lodge, Villas and Pit Lane Suites on site
- Paddock garages
- Free general camping for members
- Preferred member parking and spectator event entry
